Dear Theatre Friends,
Theatre for a New Audience in association with Rose Theatre, London will be presenting the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh production of “Macbeth “An Undoing” beginning April 5th. It’s written and directed by Zinnie Harris, with a nod to William Shakespeare. Read this very positive Guardian review and then decide quickly– only a month-long run.
Another adaptation of a classic is Heidi Schreck’s (“What the Constitution Means to Me”) “Uncle Vanya” at Lincoln Center. The cast is starry indeed- including Alfred Molina, Steve Carell, Jayne Houdyshell, Alison Pill among others. They will surely do Chekhov proud!
Pulitzer Prize Finalist theatre company, Page 73, is presenting 2023 Playwriting Fellow Majkin Holmquist’s “Stargazers” directed by Colette Robert. If you’re interested in fine new writing, do try this.
Of course, veteran playwrights are also hard at work. Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel’s newest, “Mother Play,” will be directed by Tina Landau. It’s produced by 2nd Stage on Broadway and stars Jessica Lange.
If you didn’t catch “Mary Jane” in 2017 at New York Theatre Workshop, you have another chance, now starring Rachel McAdams, presented by MTC. It’s written by Amy Herzog and directed by Anne Kauffman. The play received a Critic’s Pick from the New York Times in its original off-Broadway production. It was memorable!
The first play in 59e59’s Brits off Broadway festival will be presented this month. “Lorenzo” by Ben Target was glowingly received when it began at Soho Theatre, London. Please look at all the the future plays in this year’s program. I’ll certainly be seeing “Windrush Secret”, “The Brief Life and Mysterious Death of Boris III, King of Bulgaria” and “Blizzard.”
I rarely recommend musicals, but “Three Houses” is by the MacArthur Genius, Dave Malloy. His myriad awards and productions include the unforgettably lavish “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”. Run to Signature Theatre to see Dave’s latest work of theatre art.
That’s all for now. Hope to see you at the theatre!
