I hope your holidays were great fun and you’re now ready for real fun! Here are some plays I think you’ll enjoy:
The often cryptic, thoroughlyfascinating Enda Walsh returns to NY with “Ballyturk” at St. Ann’s. Sadly, only one third of the original Dublin cast, Mikel Murfi, will join this production. Here’s a review from the Abbey run.
It will be interesting to compare one of Enda’s early, wildly energetic plays, “Disco Pigs,” coming to The Irish Rep, for a 20th anniversary revival. Here’s a review from a previous production at 59 e59.
Speaking of 59 e 59, you won’t want to miss “Balls” which recreates “The Battle of the Sexes, Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King.” I saw a workshop of this piece by Kevin Armento and Bryony Lavery (“Frozen”), and was transported to the event which transfixed millions!
Here’s a second chance to see “[Porto]” by Kate Benson at Women’s Project which I missed during its wonderfully well reviewed premiere at The Bushwick Starr. Maybe you missed it too?
I’ll be going to TFANA for “He brought Her Heart Back in a Box” by the legendary Adrienne Kennedy. It will be my first exposure to her poetic work — her first new play in nine years.
I must mention a recurring January event, “Under the Radar Festival” for all of you avant-garde performance lovers — at The Public and various other venues.
I know, not officially a play — do try to see “Young Marx”, described as Karl meets Groucho, broadcast by National Theatre Live, starring the fabulous Rory Kinnear. Here’s a London review.
Two Albee playswill be coming to the Signature: “At Home at the Zoo: Homelife and The Zoo Story,” later this month. An opportunity not to be missed!
And for a celebration of both theatre and magic, do try to get to Noah Levine’s “Magic After Hours.” Perhaps not technically a “play,” but a terrific performance by a charming host — for anyone who becomes a child again, while watching sleight-of-hand. Here is a link for tickets.
Looking ahead, you may want to buy these now, you may not get the chance later:
“The Low Road” by Bruce Norris (“The Pain and the Itch”) at The Public.
“Travesties” by Tom Stoppard, coming to Roundabout, with the terrific Tom Hollander.
Enough for one newsletter! Wishing you wonderful theatre for 2018. See you there!
Carol Tambor publishes a monthly newsletter, which announces worthy shows coming to New York, along with occasional information about London theatre and, of course, the Edinburgh Fringe.
